park near mulberry

Park near Mulberry

outside the head shop
Irene the hippie girl
told fortunes
did tarot readings

when asking for your star sign
she spoke with an unknown accent
though her mother tongue was English
passersby feared for her safety

she sometimes stepped into traffic
always pulled back in time
turned to look at reflections
in the bookstore window

down on Mulberry street
Irene played
at a life of her own making
dreams on sugar cubes
